HOT WATER.
TO THE EDXTOS. Sir, —While spending the day recently with. my family at St. Kilda. Beach I inquired where hot water could be obtained, and I was informed where my want could be supplied. There I got about two quarts of boiling water, for which the charge of 8d was made. I remarked to the vendor on what I considered a very exorbitant price, and the reply was that gas had gone up. Had I myself only to consider on that occasion I certainly would not have made the purchase, but. under the circumstances I reluctantly did so. I ascertained from others that they had -likewise been charged' a similar amount, and they were not slow in expressing their opinion. I may mention that' the same quantity of water can be boiled at St. Clair for Id through the medium of the corporation's gas supply. Now, sir. one is surely justified in ventilating such a case in a necessity which costs the vendor practically nothing. The public will judge on this point, for them-' selves. For the convenience of those who frequent this resort I would suggest that the authorities insta! gas meters similar to those at St. Clair, and thereby in these strenuous times help to safeguard the pecuniary interests of the »community.—l am, etc.. W. G. Maslin. April 12.
