APATHETIC COUNCILLORS.

TO THE EDITOR. ■'fi r , —Just prior to the last municipal elections a meeting of ratepayers interested in the welfare of our City was held at the Early Settlers’ Hall. At this meeting a number of candidates for municipal honoi-s were present by invitation, and assured the meeting that if returned they would do their best to give effect to cert-jin planks of the pi itform submitted by the citizens responsible for calling the meeting. Amongst these planks were two in particular—namely: (1) The immediate review of the Balmacewen building scheme for the purpose of ascertaining whether or not the proposed scheme is fromja financial and other pints of view in the best interests of the City and of those whom the scheme is intended to benefit. 12) The rendering of every assistance in obtaining from Parliament such necessary legislation as will enable the City of Greater Dunedin to commit the control and management of the municipal business to a council of commissioners to bo appointed by the City electors, and in particular for the furtherance of such purpose to (a) co-operate with a committee of citizens; (b) brine the question of management by commissioners before the Municipal Association with a view to obtaining their assistance. The successful candidates who gave these pledges have How been in office as City councillors for nearly 12 montlis; but I would like to ask them through you, sir, waat has become of their promises? So far as I am aware not one of these councillors has done anything in fulfilment of the pledges made and on the strength of which matiy pi us gave them our votes. We shall certainly remember this at the next municipal election; but can notliing be done in the meantime to stir these councillors up to sn honorable sense of their responsibilities?—l am, etc., Thomas Begg.
