BIG BUILDING PROGRAMME

PRINCES STREET AND MOB \Y PLACE. A FULL CITY BLOCK. CONTRACT NEAR £44,CCO. Demolition of the old Criterion structure will commence this week in me- . important building operations which will change the whole face of tho City block, and involve a sum approaching £44,000. * The chief building contemplated and to be completed, if possible, in 12 months will extend from the Savoy Restaurant to the present Herbert Haynes building, wjth a frontage to Princes street of jo4tt and a depth of 69ft. The design is in harmony with the Savoy, and the elevation to Princes street will be a three-story one, with basements runnmg the full length. The structure will be steel-framed throughout, with flab roof covered with Neuchatel asphalt, forming a spac.ous promenade or roof garden in approved modern style; and the new block ought to be one of the chief garnitures of the City. The shop abutting Herbert, Haynes’ present premises will be taken over as an extension of their shop and showrooms, and the remainder of the ground floor up to Dawsons, Limited, will be let in three shop premises. About half of the second, floor will be taken over as an extension of the Savoy, and the upper floor will be available for leasing. The other building contemplated, which, in conjunction with the Princes street structure, will complete the original" conceptron of what this block was to be will -be a four-story brick building, extending in Moray place from the Savoy to the premises known as Smith and Listers warehouse. The whole of this bm ding is for Dawsons. Limited, who will install on the ground floor a new optical smte offices, and show room, and will sub-let the upper stories. Both buildings are to be built bv Messrs Wood and M'Cormack to plans drawn by Messrs Anscombe, Smith, and Associates.
