TENNIS TOURNAMENT

The semi-finals and finals of the Otago Lawn Tennis Association's Easter tourna- t ment were played on the Anderswn Bay p Courts on Saturday afternoon. There was v a. good attendance ; including a- number of a girls from the various colleges. The afternoon was a good one for tennis, the light " being fair, and there was no wind. In F the final of the men’s championship singles e the runner-up, E. D. Duthie, was oat- j classed by G. Ollivier, the New Zealand ~ champion winning three straight-out sets. ‘ 6-0, 6-0. Duthie took the 5 third set on Saturday, and the match. 1 —Final.— c G. Ollivier beat Duthie, 6-0, 6-0, 6-1, At the conclusion of the play Mr A. E. r Harm way (president of the association) t , addressed those present, and presented the t . prizes for the events held over last Tues- y day. The weather. He said, had been fine c ’ throughout the five days’ plav, and there had looms no stoppage of the" games. He j, referred to the fact that the Southland p and North Otago Associations had almost p decided to hold tournaments at Easter, “ but in the interests of the Otago Associa- p tion had resolved to revert to their old j dates during Christmas and New Fear. The result was that a largo number of £ players from Southland and North Otago j ( had competed in Dunedin. Referring to t the form shown, the outstanding feature p was that of Mr G. Ollivier, New Zealand champion, who had again annexed the c singles championship and the men’s doubles with Mr Sheppard. The length and pace of his drives, as well as his placing, were 1 an object lesson to the many young players present. In Mr E. D. Duthie they had a 1 new finalist, who, although well' beaten, 1 showed great promise. He hoped that ! when the New Zealand Association had i settled the rumored differences which had | arisen between the members they would j settle down to business, and see to it that 1 Mr Ollivier was sent to England, and also ! to Antwerp to represent tire Dominion at : the Olympic Games. While not admitting that the form in the ladies' singVs chain- • pioaship was tip to the standard set by • , Miss F. Campbell in many pre-war tourna- . meats, there was. lie said, much promising material, and both Mrs Lemon and Miss Pattison had shown form above the average. He honed to see Miss Campbell enter the championship arena nest season. It was pleasing and notable that two players from Cambrians. Messrs Swinney and Morgan, had captured the first and second prizes in the men’s B grade singles. He could not refer to ail who had won. but Miss J. M'L-aron and several older players had performed tip to their reputations. He desired to thank Messrs J. H. Meek and R. >S. Black (vico-preei- 5 dents), and .also Mosers S. N. Brown, R. A. Wilkie, and J. Manson for valuable aid, and especially Messrs Andrew Nicolson. B. B. C’ouston, T. Begg, and A. E. M'Dougall, who so willingly gave their servicer. Many of the competitors—ladies and men—ba-d also assisted by umpiring. Their secretary, Mr E. S. Wilson, had ably performed his heavy duties, which were the more trying a? he was virtually confined to the ofiice on. the courts on each day. The Press also had furthered the interests of the sport by their excellent reports. After the prizes had been presented cheers were’given for-the winners and the president. Mr B. B. Gouston (president of the 1 Junior Association) referred to the kindness of the association !n inviting the mrls from the colleges and Mornington School to see the play, and at his call three’ hearty cheers wore given by the juniors for the president and executive.
