BETWEEN NORTH AND SOUTH ISLANDS. [Per United Phess Association.] WELLINGTON, April 7. The Telegraph Department wishes to improve telephone communication with the South Island. During the war the telephone cables were greatly improved, and Mr Shrimpton, the Chief' Telegraph Engineer, will probably be sent Home to obtain a. cable suitable for the purpose. The Pacific cable steamer Iris recently surveyed the bottom of Cook Strait aloir>the route proposed. r>
