TUAPEKA. rSFEOIAL TO THE * StAH.D LAWRENCE, April 5. “The most successful meeting in the history of the club” was the unanimous verdict of all who were present at the Tuapeka County Jockey Club’s races on Easter Saturday. ' The weather was perfect ; there was a large attendance (despite the additional impost of 2s at the , gate); the fields were good, the racing interesting, and apparently there was no , lack of money for investment. In short, it was a day of records for the club. The gate (£211) was the largest the club have - ever secured, while the totalisator investments (£9,700, as compared with £5,513 last year) constituted a new high-water i mark. The track was in .good order, , though naturally a trifle hard, and the . starting of Air D. Jolly was very satis- , factory. There were no refractory animals, and in every race prompt despatches were effected? In the Maiden Plate only six of the 12 , horses nominated lined up at the barrier, the withdrawals being f-amson. Master "Deuis, Lady Fire, Silent Fort, Dionc, and Last AATmI. Roniform (9.0) was made a . strong favorite. Galway (8.9) led till the back of the course, where he was joined by Roniform, the pair racing together til! well in the straight, when the latter went on and won by half a length, tqtilde (8.12) a length behind third. Time, Imin 18 l-ssec. The pinnies choice in the Tuapeka Handicap (mih and a-quarter) was Rapid River. There were no scratchings. Hardshot and the favorite led for the first four furlongs, the remainder of the field being about three lengths behind. This order was maintained till coming to the borne turn, when the field closed up, and Jack Symons (8.4) and Awahou (7.0) moved forward, and in a good finish the former won by a length from Awahou, Rapid River (7.6) the same distance away third. The President’s Trot (mile and'a-half), in which nine of the 12 acceptors faced’ the starter, proved an easy win for Until, who on the limit was apparently well treated. Brown Owl (12yds behind) led for the first couple of furlongs, when he was | passed by Until, who assumed a sub- j stantial lead, which he' maintained , till | the finish. Coming to the straight in the I last round Indiana Girl came through in | good style, and beat Brown Owl for second 1 place by a nose. Time, 3min 51sec. In the Hack Handicap (five furlongs) the | pencil was put .through the names of five I of the acceptors—viz., Adjustment. Lady Links*, Vice-Regal, and Mina. The public’s choice was Master Denis. Lady Knight (8.13) was the first to break the hue from a good start, and led to the back of j the course, where Barley Rigs (8.12) and | Master Denis (8.10) moved up. These two raced together in the lead till '.ell in] the straight, when in a c'nod finish Bariev \ Rigs obtained the verdict bv a heacf, . Lady Knight half a length away third! 1 Time, Imin 2 3-ssec. ' j In the Lawrence Handicap (six furlongs) ! there was a field of five, Mythoiogy being i scratched. Palarnon was lavonle, but to justify his backers’ confidence. Thestius (8.6) vvas the first out from a ; good start, and led to the finish, winning I by two lengths. Palamon (9.6) was running second till well up the straight, when Ardmore (9.9) challenged, and in a good finish secured second place by half a length. Time, Imin 16sec. In. a field of 13 for the Dash Trot (one mile) Indiana Girl was made a strong favorite. The scratchings were I’etei-villc, Littlefield, and Green Stripe (ail lack! 1 markers). Rosebery (scr) led from the ■ start to within a few yards of the post, ; when be was overtaken by Kaloon (scr), i ■who in a good finish got the judge’s verdict by a nose, Kentucky Wood 12 lengths away third. Indiana Girl’s chance m the race was spoiled through Gwendoline Fontaine galloping in front of her, and in getting clear she stumbled and lost mount. Time, 2min 32sec. . ihe Stewards’ Hack Handicap proved the smallest fie'd, only four of the e>ht accepted horses lining" up to the barrier. The withdrawals were Mythology, Lactv Links Dilatory, and .Micky Free!" .Master Denis was the public’s choice. Erroneous (8.11) led out, and after half the distance was covered was joined by Master Denis (8.10), the pan- racing together till the turn forborne. At this point L<VJv Superior (8 lo), win had maintained a h'andv rosition in the race, moved forward, and in a good finish won by a length from Master Denis, Erroneous three lengths awav third. Time, Imin 17sec. The Flying Handicap (five furlongs), with six starters, proved the best .betting race of the meeting, the machine r.cord 1 mg investments totalling £1.547. KiH O . wen (9.4) was the favorite. Thestius (9 7) and Sunlit (8.7) being also strongly supP°!/ed Sunlit got out with a good break, and led till nearly home. [By Old Identity.] AiTo»»urn, winner of the C.J.C. Easter Handicap, which’ is the equivalent oi the English Cambridgeshire, is an ■ English horse. H. Gray rode him, and had the luck to get a slant on the rails in a close finish. Brackenfield’s rider lost a stirrup leather at tho home turn. Michaela got away badly. Arrowsmiih’s time (Imin 25 l-ssec) is the Australasian record, for seven furlongs. Winter Wind seemed at the distance to be winning the C.J.C. Champagne, but he collapsed suddenly, thus failing on what was supposed to be his strong point —staying. Sasanof, with all his 10.8, won the Sockburn Handicap anyhow. He is in a class by himself. The actual contest for the Great Western Steeplechase at Riverton was confined to Silverspire, Zarkoma. and Palladio. “ Sir Modred” writes:—“Tho last-named was not so will seasoned as his rivals; and was the first of the trio to crack up; but Silverspire kept out of trouble all the way, jumping well, and was thus enabled to resist Zaritoma’s challenge in tho run

f home. Zarkoma, on the other hand, ' - struck several of his fences, and this, s added to physical disabilities, left him 3 without emergency steam when the final 1 test came.” , The same writer says that a considerable . amount of interest attached to the debut of a new public starter at the meeting, .- the official being none other than the . hitherto very -successful trainer for many . t ears at Riverton—viz., A D. MTvor, and t he has to be congratulated pn his initial 3 efforts. He sent the/ fields away on even j terms throughout from fiat footed tle--5 spatches. and even the equine acrobatics 1 of the bad-mannered Buffer did not dis- ( organise the final start, while the unruly , gelding was also got off from the outlaws’ 1 P en —a. space on the outside of the track fenced off by trestles Under the watchful 3 eye of MTvor and his assistant Buffer j did not get a chance to kick man or beast , on Saturday. i The Riverton judge, Mr A. Macaulay, 3 wa * subjected to a noisy demonstration i at tho finish of the Visitors’ Hack' Handit, l:a P- ft us Rhus referred to by “ Sir Modred” : “Sartolita finished on the rails, , while Rod Pal, who had been leading almost throughout, had .worked over under j the official’s box. Red Pal appeared to be winning easily 50 yards from home, but lost some ground, by swerving outt wards, as Sartolite came, with a fast, true . spurt on the rails.
