S?r William Robertson, Chief of the I rape rife! General Staff in the earlier years of the Great War, and now general commanding the army of the Rhine, has received the rank of Field Marshal. Air L. K. .Godclard, late of Brisbane, has been appointed organist and choirmaster of the Congregational Church, Moray place. Air G. T. Fitzgerald, who has been appointed evangelist to the Mornington Church of Christ, arrived last night with his family from Subiaco, West Australia. The Rev. William Grigg, president-elect of the Methodist Church of New Zealand, who. has recently returned from the front, where he was twice wounded in the discharge of chaplaincy duties, will visit Dunedin during Easter, and preach at Trinity Church on Sunday night. Mr Grigg will be remembered as having spentsome years in Dunedin as minister of Carrill Road Church. The Rev. Herbert Ford, who is being transferred to Hamilton, was entertained last night at a complimentary social at Glenaven Methodist Church. The Rev. M. "A. Rugby Pratt presided, and a good programme was submitted. Air Ford was presented with a fountain pen by Mr R. Sparrow on behalf .of the congregation. He wished Air Ford every success in his new sphere. In acknowledging the gift Mr Ford bespoke for his successor the hearty support of the people. The employees of Alessrs Scoullar and Chisholm met on Wednesday evening to express their good-will and offer their congratulations to two of their comrades— Alessrs AFEvoy and Al’Crorie —who are about to be joined in the bonds of marriage. Suitable wedding present were given. The following have passed the examination for siu’vev-ors’ licenses;— E. J. Smallfield, N. Clay, E. P. Worley, T. T. Roueha, A. D. Goodwin, G. R. W. Gossett, S. A. E. Goss, L. J. Poll. N. A. Aliddlemas, E. H. Stoddart, T. T. Andrews, and R. G. Slyfieid (Auckland). H. R. Farquhar and F. E. Brenton (Wellington), W. K. Wilton (Taumarnmii), O. J. Dolan (Haweral, H. E. Alotram (Christchurch), W. D. Corbet (Napier), and F. D. Grant (Gisborne). Twenty-six candidates sat, and only sis failed. All but two of the successful candidates are returned soldiers. Air W. H. Alackcnzis was last evening appointed by the City Council to the position of tramways manager, at a salary of £SOO per annum, the appointment to date from April 1. His duties, together with those of the city electrical engineer and the city engineer, so far a.s they are respectively concerned, will be clearly defined on the return of the electrical engineer. Cr Dove, of the St. Hilda Bjrough Council, was re-elected last evening to represent that council and also the City Council on the Ocean Beach Domain Board. Crs Taverner and Wilson were appointed to represent the City Council on the board.

Our Christchurch special advises that Mr Noel Fynmore, of Dunedin, drew a block of 1,434 acres in the Golden Downs Estate, Nelson Province, which has been bought by the Government for a soldiers’ settlement. Mr Fynmore is tho only son of Mr Chas. Fynmore, of Stuart street. He went to the front in 1915, and returned in September, 1919. A padre well known to returned soldiers of Otago is th® Rev. W. M‘Lean, MX'., who for a long time ministered to the 2nd Otago Infantry Battalion. Mr M'Lean, who returned to the Dominion by the Remuera, is looking very well, and left Dunedin this morning for Oamaru, where he is now stationed. Many men have grateful recollections of tho padre’s visit to the front line with newspapers and cigarettes. Dr and Mrs Evans left Dunedin by tho second express this morning for the North Island, where they will spend a holiday. Mr A. W. Macdonald, for the past seven years traveller for Messrs Fraser and Co., has been appointed manager of the grain department for Messrs Donald Reid and Co,, and takes up his new duties on the 7th inst. A Wellington message states: —lt is announced that Mr Page, S.M., has been appointed a, permanent Magistrate at Wellington, and Mr Stout SAL, permanent Magistrate at Palmerston North. On Tuesday afternoon a presentation was made to Mr Hunter, who has recently severed his connection with Arthur Street School to take up the position of organising teacher in Central Otago. In handing to him some volumes of the works of standard authors, tho head master referred to the splendid work done bv him during eight years, to the esteem in which the recipient was held by his coand to their regret at his departure. Mr L. D. Browett, officer in charge of •the local Later Department, who has been relieving at the head office in Wellington for soma time, returns to Dunedin this evening to lyesume charge here. A London Press Association message announced that Mr G. N. Barnes, Labor M.P.. who was a British' Plenipotentiary at the Peace Conference, Has been appointed Companion of Honor. Const .tb'e T. Parkhill, of Port Chalmers, left .the Police Force to-day with eight years’ unblemished record "behind him. He has resigned because the prospects’ of earning a living in other directions seems more promising.
