Miller), in consequence of reports that the scale insect was causing the damage, recently made a very thorouch inspection, and discovered that the real culprit was the gall, an insect which'has so far escaped even the briefest mention in works on the subject. This insect, operating from under the bark, had done its worst in a plantation at Purau, where practically every tree was dying. An Auckland resident, on finding one of his ducks dead from a wound in the neck, poisoned the body with strychnine and left it lying in the same place. Next morning a fine large ferret was lying dead beside nis victim.
