Mr John Alexander Duthie has been appointed to the vacancy on the local Land Purchase Board caused by the resignation of Mr James Begg in consequence of hie standing for Parliament. Miss Helen Richmond, M.A., has been appointed by Canterbury College Board of Governors as the college candidate tor the Royal Holloway Scholarship tenable in England. Professor Gabbatt and other members of the board made eulogistic reference to Miss Richmond’s abilities, and it was prophesied by one speaker that if she had the opportunity of taking out the scholarship she would do credit to New Zealand. Mr G. A. Goughian, who retired from the firm of G. Dyer and Co. some time ago, was the recipient of ft watch at the firm's social last night. Mr Dyer tendered the good wishes of himself and employees, and voiced their pleasure at Mr Coughlan’s return to health. Messrs James Horn (Wakatipu), J. R. Hamilton (Awarua), and G. J. Anderson (Mataura), M.P.s, returned to Dunedin by the first express yesterday afternoon. Other members of the Samoan expedition who returned to their homes in the same train were the Hon. E. P. Lee (Minister of Justice), Mr Jas. Craigie (Timaru), and Mr W. Bitchener (Waitaki). In recognition of long service, the Otago Football Association last night elected Mr D. Anderson (retiring secretary) a Ufa member. Mr Anderson has been present at every committee - meeting in 16 years. Major George Fenwick, N.Z.M.C., has returned to Auckland, after an absence of four years and a-balf. He left New Zealand with the Sixth Reinforcement, and after the evacuation of Gallipoli was attached to the Mounted Field Ambulance, accompanying that unit during the 1916 fighting in the Sinai desert. At the end of 1916 he was sent by New Zealand Headquarters to organise the ophthalmia and rhinb-laryngological. departments of No. 2 New Zealand General Hospital, Walton-on-Thames, and remained on the staff as surgeon in charge of those wards until the conclusion ol the war..
