LOW PAY AND TOO MANY BOSSES. [Pee United Press Association.’, AVHAKATANE, March 30. The Special Committee of the Taneatua Chamber of Commerce, after visiting tho railway works and investigating “complaints, have reported that the men are generally discouraged by the low pay, which does not -exceed the rate paid for shifting soil 15 years ago. It is estimated that 200 men lately tried to work at New Awaldri, and abandoned it. The overseers are keen on cutting prices, ancfc%.is also caused irritation. The committee found, in a large cutting in white pine bush, that only two men were employed, with two barrows, whose pay was less than a penny per barrow-load. There is plenty of labor available, if paid for at the same rate as local bodies. The committee found between Matata and Taneatua.. a distance of 19 miles, only 35 men, controlled by nine bosses who never took their ooata-pff.
