OBITUARY
MR GEORGE ALLPORT. A cable, message from Sydney states that Mr George Allport, late’ secretary nf the Marine Department, died suddenly on board the Ulimaroa just before the vessel arrived at the New South Wales port from Wellington. The body was taken to port. The deceased, who was 66 years of age, began his career as a public servant in 1875, and from 1905 to the time of his retirement in December last, had held the position of Secretary of Marine. Tho shipping communitv of New Zealand recognised the worth of Mr Allport, who had held the highest position as a Civil servant and adviser to the Government on marine matters. It was generally known that his heart had been failing for some time. Mr and Mrs Allport were making a trip to the Old Country, and had arranged to leave Australia shortly en route to London. The chairman of the Otago Harbor Board (Mr Tapley) to-day sent tho following telegram to the Minister of Marine at Wellington ; —“ Though tho late Mr Allport had severed his connection with your department, I desire to express, so that you can place nn record, the high appreciation in which the late gentleman was hrid by our executive officer. Ever courteous, considerate, and yet loyal to his trust as executive head of an important department, it is with sincere regret that his decease is noted.” Miss Amy Gladys Mack, eldest daughter of Mr M. .1. Mack, general secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. died at Hamilton on Friday, at the age of 26. Miss Mack, who had many friends in Wellington, had been seriously ill for some time.
