[Gossip b i Old Identity.] Up to Saturday it was not definitely settled that Michaela would be taken to Riccarton, from which fact I judge that her owner does not regard her as “ a good thing ” for the Great Easter. Nevertheless, she will run well. She always does. Brackenfield is one that may be hard to beat; and Arrowsmith, Royal Stag, and Sunart are racehorses. The Wyndlmm Racing Club have decided not to proceed with the erection of a grandstand in the meantime owing to the cost. After the Disposal Stakes at the Southland meeting on Wednesday last Lady Links was purchased at 40gs by the owner of Almoner. Referring to the race for the Southland Cup, “Sir Modred ” says: The favorite, Warlike, got into several kinds of trouble. He was asked or compelled to cover a great deal of ground during the early stages of the race, and when he did battle through on the inside to reach the front three furlongs from home he at once suffered insistent challenges from Tin Soldier and Jock. Racing to the final bend, his two opponents appeared to squeeze him out on the rails, and if he did get a good run home on the fence he previously lost more than was gained by the advantage last quoted. He was staying on well at the finish, but the local
straight proved all too short to see him j i tried right out, and this fact may have ; also handicapped his rider. The lightweight apprentice, A. E. Ellis, rode a 1 line race on Jock, and it is evident that his experiences of the current s'eason in 1 long races have not been thrown away. Indeed, to the writer’s mind, he exhi- ' bited marked ability in his final effort on an outsider hitherto claimed to be a feeble finisher. Tin .Soldier ran well, but the race will probably do him good, and he will be hard to beat at Riverton next month. Jock was turned out in excellent fettle by W. M‘Kay, of Riverton, who also has the well-known jockey A. M‘Kay as first horseman to his stable. Nocturnal jumped into the wing of the last obstacle in the Invercargill Meeplehcase, and pulled up lame. Consequent on the resignation of Hr W. A. Saunders, the Southland Racing Club are inviting applications for the position of secretary. I G. Young put up a remarkable per- : formancc by steering the winner of each of the five flat events at Invercargill on I the second day. ! J. Oisen. who was to have ridden Ris- ! ingham in the Masterton Hack Handicap, | got a nasty shaking when Parorangi fell j with him in the Telephone Hack Hnndi- | cap at Mafterton, and was unable to fill j his engagement. The services of A. J. i M’Flinn were then secured, and he suc- | ceeded in landing Risingham a winner, j Moutoa Ivanova, winner of the Eraser ! Memorial at Rangitikei, was fifth in order lof betting in a field of six. Moutoa. Ivan- | ova and Affection led Nobleman and 1 Lovematch into the straight. Down the j back Affectation fell away, and Lovematch \ joined Moutoa Ivanova. At the bend en- : tering the straight the pair were clear, 1 and m a close finish Moutoa Ivanova won I by a neck from Lovematch, with Old | Gold close up. Nobleman finished fourth, j | “ Sir Modred ” reports that A. Rowj I land, rider of Mazama in the Winter Oats I | Handicap at the Southland meeting, who j j was injured by Buffer kicking him when I 1 the horses were at the starting post, sufi fered a severe contusion of the right hip, * but fortunately no bones were broken. ! He is making satisfactory progress on I the road to recovery, but it will be some j days before he is able to get out and 1 about again. T. O’Connor, who got a j heavy fall with Tnkomairiro in the Southland Steeplechase, was very ■ severely i bruised, while one of .his shoulders was | injured. Ho declares that he will bo able i to ride at Riverton, but it may prove that the spirit is willing while the flesh is weak. Kilcalm, winner of the Trial Plate at Amberley on Saturday, is a three-year-old by Kilbroney—Esther. She won all j the w-ay. R. Derrett trains her. i Tyne and Good Hope made the running
I in the Amberley Gup, but Melee had them safe at the home turn, and he won easily by r length. Fiery Cross had a run in the Wattle Handicap at Amberley. ‘ Lyttelton Times’ reports that Pyjama, Algidus, Sleepy Head, and Mustard Pot comprised the front division in the early stages. At the end of two furlongs Pyjama had drawn out clear, and he had a lead of two 1 lengths at the entrance to the straight, S where Sleepy Hoad and Algidus were in j trouble. Once in line for home, Fiery I Cross and Link Up put in their claims. Pyjama was going well in front 100 yds j from home, but Mustard Pot gradually worc liim down, and won by a good head. I Fiery Cross was a length away, just- in | front of Link Up. | Troytown, winner of the Liverpool Grand I National Steeplechase, is by Zria from I Diane, and is owned by Major Gerrard. |: a
