Waite Borough Council ara sending the Mayor to Wellington to urge Government action to resolve the minmir impasse. There are indications that a large number of men are leaving the town. Owing- to 'he. strike the council have hod to dispense wita nearly the whole working staff of 40. "An Auckland message states that a heavy gale at 8.30 this morning wrecked the verandah!? of seven shops, and several other shops were damaged by ttie*e carrying away. A, thunderstorm at Paparoa has' caused the highest nosd known for 57 years. The river flats are completely inundated, several houses are surrounded, and anxiety for the safety of railway workers camped close to the stream is felt.—Auckland message.
