HARBOR ENGINEER'S REPORT

Mr Wilki© (engineer to tho Otago Harbor Board) reports that during the month of February dredge 222 lifted five loads, or 4,165 cubic yards, of spoil from the Victoria Channel in the vicinity of piles 31 and 32, 16 loads, or 13,328 cubic yards, from Rattray street wharf, making a total of 21 loads, or 17,493 cubic vards, for the month. The dtedgings from the bottom of the cut at Rattray street wharf contained much etono, and two loads of this material were taken to sea in order to avoid probable injury to the Vulcan's runner. The remainder of the spoil (13,328 cubic yards) was deposited at the Vulcan. On February 9 the dredge took the ground while turning in the channel off Ravensboume, but sustained no damage. The dredge steamed 130 miles, and burned 159 tons of coai. Tho supply is still unsatisfactory, and a large. percentage of the coal being used is lignite. During the month of February the Vulo.au pumped into Lake Logan 15,827 cubic yards of material received from dredge 222. The dredgings from ■ Rattray street wharf being full of timber, iron, etc., considerable delays occurred in removing blockages in the runner. - Advantage was taken of the two trips of dredge 222 to the Heads to overhaul and repair punts pipes, and ball joints. The two Aga flashing lights have been installed in the leading beacona at the mole, and are now being adjusted before being gazetted. Hayward Point light: The work is neariiig completion, and it is hoped to have the light in operation by the end of the month. Rattray street wharf widening: The bertli alongside this wharf has been dredged to 28ft at low water, and the new piles are now being driving.
