0.8.H.5. BOARD OF GOVERNORS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l was astonished, not to say disgusted, when I read “Old Boy’s” letter in Saturday night’s ‘ Star.’ His ideas to me seem very amusing. Because the board had got into deep water over Phillips’s case, which is now a thing of the past, and because the board have evidently disappointed a few who anticipated their resignation, are they to be criticised by every Tom. Dick, and Harry for doing their plain duty? “Old Boy” goes a peculiar way at getting a public knock at Dr Fulton, and suggests that it is the aim of the board to “get one back” on to the rector and staff. But what I, as another old boy, want to point out is the justification the board have in preparing a report on results of the recent examinations. Anyone who has followed the results with the idea of noting how well the old school has done has surely been much disappointed. Something is wrong somewhere—incompetent staff, unsatisfactory pupils, carelessless—what? This the board, as is right, are trying to locate, and it is the honor and welfare of the school they have in mind when preparing their report; and I trust such report will serve to waken rector and school to the fact that the public of Otago want better results from the Otago Boys’ High School in 1920, and also the report will show to the clear-headed that the board are taking a vital interest in the school; not, as it has_ been hinted, that the board are now an institution for the furtherance of their own ends.— l am, etc., Mac. Pebruarv 23.
