The writer regretted it" any inconvenience had ixten caused., and he had giveu orders that the waiting room be kept open if no special reason existed for locking it.—Received. REPORTS. The Works Committee reported that the main streets a-utii square had been attended to as usual since the previous meeting; | footpaths had been repaired, tarred, u7lu i sanded in George street, Island terrace, Men- j dian street, Aiagueiic street; channels and steps had been repaired and cleaned in Wickliife terrace and Inland terrace; grass, thistles, elderberry, and brambles had been cut in Aurora, terrace, Beach road, Aiacaudrew road, and Fox street; several mud tanks cleaned; four trucks of asphalt mixed at the corporation yard; and the lips levelled and covered. The committee wcie considering tho. matter of assisting householders to install wash-down lavatories, wero getting quotations for' labor and material tor a. number of them, and might possibly undertake to put on a man to do tbe work and charge tbe householders. A fuller report would be made when the prices came to hand.—Adopted. The AVater and Reserves Committee reported that the matter of the water supply to the- wharves and dock was still unsatisfactory, but the committee intended making an investigation of the pipes from tlie square to tho wharf as soon as possible. 'tne. forester had for the past fortnight been cutting hedges arid weeding, etc., in the nursery. A start had been made to erect the fence on the old roadline at JLihiwaka, opposite Mrs While's, hut owing to the bad nature of the ground sjow progress had been made. Owing to the dry weather the reservoir was falling very fast, and was now 3ft below normal. The rainfall recorded at the reservoir for January was 150 points, being the lowest since June, 1917, aud for the ?.U days of the present month only 78 points have fallen.—Adopted.
The Finance Commrtee reported the fortnight's receipU at £650 4o Bd, unci expediting £193 lik Id. In ike jjas department the debit balance amounted to £4,074 12a 3d on tho 6th inst. The past fortnight's receipts totalled £52 16= 9d, and the expenditure (.including purchase of coal) £IBB 17s 10d.—Adopted. The Cms Committee reported that several new gas services had been installed, but influenza was retarding- Jjio work. An electric motor would bo running- next week in placo of the gas engine, which was unsatisfactory. The erection of new retorts was being expedited.—Adopted. GENERAL. It was slated that the council had appointed Mr F. Taylor as gas manager, in eucce.siion to Mr G. Pearce, who was resigning- for health reasons. A memo, from the Mayor suggested that the overdraft in .connection with the recent purchase of the gasworks be wiped out by a loan, finance Committee to report. Cr Allen moved that the council divert water from running over u section belonging to Mrs Fletcher"at Carey Bay, as it was damaging the (property.—-Cr Limn said the section was a natural watercourse, although he believed a mistake hod been made in pulling m pipes.—Motion lost.
