A CITY UNDER THE SEA

Heavy seas at Dimwich, in Suffolk, are reported to have brought down hall the tower of Dumvich Church, which fell into the sea. The remainder of the old edifice i is doomed, as the cliffs are falling on cither side of it. The tale of the East Coast churches which have vanished in the sea is a long and romantic one (says a ‘Daily Chronicle’ writer). But on many other parts _of the English coast the constant erosion is serious, and, one fears, often a neglected matter. To deal satisfactorily with it, of course, presents many difficulties and demands the spending of a lot of money. That old church oi Dumvich represents all that remains of the once noble seven churches that made the ancient port a solid, respectable town. AVe should know very little of the bravery ' of the city under the sea if_it had not | been for the lucky discovery of a great i iron box washed up on the beach from a ' wreck. This box contained the records of j Dumvich from the year 1555, and very \ curious and miscellaneous reading they make. What one chiefly admires about the I Dimwich magistracy of the Jacobean days : is their unfailing 'kindness to strangers, i and especially to Scotsmen. James, it ; seems, brought many of his countrymen : with him. and some get stranded in Dun- ' wich. One item reads; “ Geveu to a I Scottishman being sicke in the towne, to I send him hence, ijs.” Which you may | Interpret as you please. * I
