A I.LLTXGTOX, February 18. . Ihe Education Department states'that it is quite illegal for education boards to relieve guarantors of the conditions of their bonds entered into in respect to women students at training colleges when such students marry. This decision docs not present students from marrying, hut it ho.ds the guarantor liable for a refund of uie moneys paid by the Government, and toi which the student is not returning to the State in teaching service. ° Hie stipulated equivalent of the amended awards filed in the Arbitration Court grants a bonus of 4s a week to all male workers ancp2s a week to all female workers in the following industrial unions ot the Wellington industrial districts outside 25 miles radius:—Private hotel and board-ing-house employees, and luncheon and tea restaurants and oyster saloon employees. A similar order is made in the case of unions covered by the Wanganui, Oroua, and Palmerston North district hotel worker.-, award ; the Waipawa, Wairarapa, Otaki, Manawatu, Rangitikei, Waimarino, and Paliiatua districts licensed hotel employees’ award ; and the Napier and Hawke's Bay district licensed hotel employees’ award. In the case of the Wellington city hotel workers the bonus is to be 6s a week until the Court orders otherwise.
AUCKLAND, February 18. The Board of Trade have decided to restrict permits _ for benzine supplies to essentia! industries. The present cut is not drastic, hut it may be increased within a fortnight. The executive of the Provincial Farmers’ Union endorsed the demand for Government action to clear the cool stores of the meat accumulation. It was decided to send a strong deputation to Wellington to interview the Prime Minister. It was also resolved that the producers of the Dominion take- immediate steps to provide their own ships. This is intended as a guide to the delegates at the meeting of the Board of Agriculture in Wellington to discuss the carnage of produce to England. Mr Boddie stated that, a capital oi 16 millions would be necessary to carry out the scheme.
... CHRISTCHURCH. February 18. . indication by Mr W. Slaughter, inspector of factories, to have fixed the capital yuiue of a house was made before Mr McCarthy, S.M., to-day, under Part 1 ot the War Legislation Amendment Act, 1916, its amendments. The case was probaoly the first of its kind heard in the South Island. It was stated that the landlord had attempted to raise the rent from 16s to 255, whereas the Act only allows a maximum rent of 8 per cent, on the 1914 value of the house, as determined by a magistrate. Judgment was reserved.
