It was recently stated that the Auckland Education Board had advised their teachers that marriage on the part of a woman teacher would be regarded as sufficient ground for relieving her from the obligation entered into under the Training College bond—a bond signed by guarantors who stand to lose the amount spent on training the teacher if she should fail to put in at her profession three out of the first six years following training. The department has now issued a notice -that the Auckland Board’s action was quite illegal, that no such exemption will be recognised, and that, while this decision does hot prevent students from marryino the department will hold guarantors liable for the refund of moneys paid by the Government for which the student does not return to the State in teaching service the stipulated equivalent. The Dominion conference of the Women’s National Deserve was officially opened at New Plymouth to-day. Delegates from all parts of New Zealand were entertained yesterday with a drive in the morning and a garden party in the afternoon. At the garden party an illuminated ajldrese was presented to Mrs Porter, Dominion organiser of the reserve, in recognition of her splendid work during the war, and the Prime Minister telegraphed the Government’s warm appreciation of this Jady’s yvork;
