OTAGO v. SOUTffIkANTJ. Fiesx Da?.—Totbsday. The inopportune showers which fell yesterday caused a delay in starting the '.Ticket match between Otago and Southland on the Oarisbrook Ground, and it was 3.20 p.m. before the first ball was bowled. The rain also made the -wicket heavy though easy) and the outfield greasy, conditions which, however, have become familiar to crickets in Dunedin and, so say our visitors, in Invercargill also. Galland skipped the home team yeatorday, and Poole led the Southerners, who won the toss and batted first. Messrs M'Connochie and Restieaux were the .umpires. There was nothing verv inspiring about the visitors' batting. It took them an hour to get the first 36 runs, and 78 minutes to get their toal of 65. Torrance b6wled well, and not one of the batsmen dared to take liberties with him. The left-hander has changed his style since pie-war days, his fast ball being the exception and not the rule. His delivery now is not unlike that of Wilfred Rhodes, the Yorkshire and All England bowler. Beeby had some of the batsmen thinking with his slow stuff, and had a couple of chances missed off him in one over. Although not scored off freely, Alloo did not look like getting wickets. ' G. M'Beth and A. Hamilton gave the soundest exhibition oi batting on the Southland side, Dixon getting his runs by hitting " hard and high and often."
It was just a minute or two to 5 when Otago began their innings, and "play was extended to 6.30. .The brightest batting was shown towards the end of the day by C. Alloo, L. Ch-.idwick, and Hutchison, who each laid on the wood in refreshing style, and made many capital strokes. One swing of Ohadwick's landed M'Beth over the leg fence in front of the grand stand. He scored 14 off that particular over. Westbrook gave the impression of not being comfortable to any of the bowlers, except, perhaps, Kavanagh when he first went on. Nevertheless, between Whiles lie got in effective scoring strokes, and made what is so far top score of the match. M'Beth bowled consistently, and had to be watched. His one loose over was that in which Chadwick banged him for 14. The ex-Canterbury man bowled unrelieved for an hour and a-half, and had only 44 runs knocked off him. Fogo showed good form with the ball also, and the onlookers were surprised when he was taken off after bowling five overs only. The fielding of both sides was fairly good] Otago's ground fielding being sound. Raines and G. M'Beth opened the Southland innings, Torrance bowling to the former, who played across at the fourth ball and was yorked. Kavanagh followed, and M'Beth opened the account by getting A. Alloo (who bowled from the Cargiil road end) square for 3. After M'Beth had got an uppish 4 over Hutchison's head at cover Torrance, in his third over, removed Kavanagh's off stick. Camm came in and brought up 10 after 20 minutes' play, getting Alloo twice to leg. Camm then lost one altogether from Torrance, and again the sticks rattled, and tho telegraph board showed 14—3—6. A. Hamilton opened up with a good 4 to long-leg off the left-hander, and a cover hit_ to M'Beth off Alloo brought up 20, which had been scored in 35 minutes off 10 overs. At 29 M'Beth hit Torrance hard back and was held. Poole went the same over, being caught at point off a skier. 31—-s—l, Torrance having bagged all five wickets for 11 runs. A. M'Beth came next, and Beeby replaced Alloo. The batsmen treated the slows very gingerly, which brought an appeal from a ban-acker to " hit him over the Workshops." Hamilton at 10 was missed bv A. Alloo at square-leg off Torrance, but three balk later Galland made no mistake at mid-on, and Hamilton retired. 35—6—10. Poole was next, and again came the barracker's voice: "The Workshons are over there." M'Beth tried to oblige', but found "over there" too far, and the ball landed in Galland's safe hands. The third brother M'Beth (Dan, the bowler) was next in, but after getting 4 he also attempted the Workshops stroke, and was out lbw to Beeby. 39—7—4. Bogue lasted two balls, and cocked Besby to L. Chadwick, who took a catch at deep slip just clear of the ground. Dixon began to hit right away, and gave Galland a difficult chance off Beeby. Next ball C. Alloo dropped him at long-on, 9 runs coming from the over. Dixon drew Torrance into A. Alloo's hands at forward leg, and the innings closed far 55.
Otago began with Eckhold and Westbrook. Play was fairly careful for a while, and the Carisbrook man scored with tn--, risky strokes. Eckhold got M'Beth past cover for 4, and singles and twos brought up 20 in 20 minutes. Weatbrook (who was running smartly between wickets) gave a difficult chance to Hamilton at point. Kavanagh relieved Fogo at 23 and Westbrook promptly hit three loose ones to leg for 2, 4, and 2. The separation came at the other end, Bogue, who had made a good attempt to stump Eckhold the previous over, now getting him off M'Beth. 53—1—9. A. Alloo had short shrift, snicking M'Beth's first ball into Poole's hands at second slip. Smith began promisingly, but was ran out in attempting a second ran off a bve. Gailand, who followed, hit Kavanagh for 4, but was bowled by one from M'Beth which kept very low—a regular submarine. 48—4—5. G. Alloo started his account with a nice coyer hit to the fence, bringing uo 50. With *6O up Dixon replaced Kavanajjh but was well on the leg side, enabling westbrook.to make hay. Li trying to lift -U Beth, Y\ estbrook was clean bowled 77—5—40. L. Chadwick came in and lost no time in getting to work. Poole came on, and play livened up till O. Alloo wa<= well taken at square-leg by Raines off the new bowler. Hutchison and Chadwick kept the game going in lively fashion until the drawing of stumps. Scores:—
