OBITUARY
On Thivrsady last, at the age of 85, there passed away, at his residence, Rye, Melbourne, -in tho person of William Oram Ball, a gentleman who wa,s at one time a prominent figure in social and commercial circles in this City, where he carried on the business of sharebroker and land and estate agent. Mr Ball, with his brother Andrew (the founder of Townsville, Queensland), came out to Australia in the fifties. He was interested in many mining ventures at that time. He subsequently came over to New Zealand, where he still took a keen interest in mining, losing quite a fortune in some of his speculations in quartz mines during its boom in the early days. He was also a great sporting enthusiast. Mr Ball was born in County Derry. Ireland, where Ids father, James Crichton Ball, bore a high social standing, numbering among his many friends Lord Mountjoy. H-is brother, John, was aide-de-camp to Lord. Roberts in the Indian Mutiny. Mr Ball leave? a family of nine, the only one resident in New Zealand being- Mr Carlton Ball, of Eave-nsbourne.
