WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL
The monthly meeting yesterday was attended by Crs A. S. Orbell (chairman), C. jM'Lachla'n, P. Briscoe,. R. Marshall, E. | Lalev, and I. M'Gill. The Chairman welcomed Cr Marshal! I back to the council table. Cr Marshal! had been elected to the vacancy created by Cr J. MLood having left the district to go farming in tho North Island. REPORTS. The inspector's monthly report detailed the work on hand in the various ridings. In Hawksbury Riding tho men had been employed for the month surfacing Kiatoa road, "Mount Watkin road, and repairing damage done by the recent heavy rain.— Approved. In Merton Riding water-tables had been cleaned on tho Warrington-Kvansdale road, metal put into the rulir, and bush cut back at the,bends. Several portions of the Hummockside road had been surfaced, and 50yds of rotten rock was needed for Br'ightling road. —Approved ; the material for Brightling road to be procured. In Blueskin Riding slips on the L>wer Harbor road had been cleared, arid watertables cleaned on the Port-Waitati ana Main North roads.—Approved. In North-east Valley Riding a deep_ culvert which collapsed on the "Wa-itati-Wakari road had been replaced by 12in piping. 'Water-tables had been cleaned on the Reservoir road at Sawyers Bay, and cinders spread on portion of the footpath. —Approved. CORRESPONDENCE. From the Department of Internal Affairs asking for particulars of the local peace celebrations, for the purpose of compiling a Dominion record. —Particulars to be supplied. . From the Valuation Department advising that a new .system of correcting the rolls was about to be adopted m respect to the vears in which no general revision of rates took place. The plan was to ad vise the council periodically (about every month) of any changes in occupancy or ownership that cumo to the department's knowledge. This system was now in operation in all other centres, and was giving satisfaction to the department and to loca* bo "'sl'-:. —Approved. From the Treasury asking co-operation in raising the Victory Loan. —Received. From 'the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board notifying receipt of a draft copy of the South Ota-go Hospital Bill, which had been read in Parliament a first time. This Bill provided for the deletion of the Bruce and Clutha counties (and the boroughs therein) from the Ot-ago Board's district. Tho council were asked to use every means to prevent the Bill becoming law. —The Chairman said he had taken on himself to instruct their M.P. as the letter re quested.—Cr Briscoe thought the separation movement was at first merely a protest against the ever-increasing hospital levies, "but it was now a. genuine attempt to separate. —The chairman's action was approved. From the Waihemo County Council asking co-operation in endeavoring to get legislation to limit speed of motor cars to 25 milea an hour.—Received. Councillors were inclined to regard tho proposal as impracticable, and that the present regulations would have to meet tho position. The Waihemo Countv Council further wrote asking if the Waikouaiti County Council wero prepared to make a grant towards repairing Brooks road, Mount Royal, as the writers received only a few shillings of rates from the property. —Rosolved to assist, and to ask that estimate of cost be supplied. Mr F. E. Hilliker complained that water had been diverted on the road at the back of his property at Purakanui, and the load was now a bog.—lnspector to attend I to matter.
The Ota go Motor Club asked for permission to put on the Main North (from the Port road to Mount Cargill School) the reserve metal now stacked on the top of this hill. The club would do the work under tho council's supervision. The writers to be informed that permission to do this work was given some time ago. The Waikouaiti Racing Clnh wanted permission to remove some soil from a piece of land on the south side of the Waikouaiti bridge ; also wanted tho council to buy some timber suitable for bridcebuiWinc.— Permission iriven to remove the soil; the timber to be purchased if the price wer« right. GENERAL. Tho inspector was instructed to report in respect to the Kiatoa ford, also in reference-to the probable cost of widening the bridge there. The council decided to donate £SO towards the initial expenses in connection with the proposed Otago hydro-electric scheme.
