HIGHLAND PIPE BAND
The annual ball of the above band was held in the Barlv Settlers’ Hall on Friday night. There was a large attendance of members, honorary members, and Highlanders. over ICO couples taking part in the grand inarch, which was led by Pipemajor and Mrs Grant, preceded by four of tiie baud’? pipers. The hall was tastefully decorated, and the Scottish Standard was suspended over the platform. The blending of the Highland chess with the beautiful dresses of the ladies was a very pretty sight. The grand march was successfully ciirried out under the guidance of Drum-major Gilchrist, chief M.C. Tho band members wore different doublets: scarlet, white, and dark blue (red, white, and blue). Several members of the Tnieri Pipe Baud were present, including Drummajor Cheyne wearing. the Cameron tartan, and others wearing the tartan of their different clans. It was a fitting revival of the good old Caledonian Society, Gaelic Society, and Highland Eiflos' Halls of former years, and the programme included some of the old Highland dances and reels. The dance music was supplied by Messrs Boath and Yates. They , were relieved occasionally by members of the band, who played for the Highland dances and some of the waltzes. The catering was in the hands of Mr J. Kroon. The band have reason to ho proud of the success of their ball, as it shows tho appreciation by the general public of the services rendered by the band during the war years. Praise is due to the secretary of the Ball Committee (Drummer L. Shearer).
