GOVERNMENT DOCKYARDS
A- DAMNATORY REPORT.
Press Association—By Telegraph—Cbpyrwhi Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.
SYDNEY, August 11, (Received August 11, at 8.55 a.m.)
The report of the Royal Commission appointed to inquire into the working of the Government dockyards at Walsh Island is strongly condemnatory. It states that tho capital "has been expended unprofitably in equipping the establishment; that the cost of work done there, when compared -with that don© _ elsewhere, is excessive; that neither estimates of tho cost of work have been supplied nor charges provided for depreciation or for interest on the capital since the inception of the establishment, which has consequently been a distinctly unprofitable venture. _ The Commission recommend a reduction to suitable dimensions, in order to meet service needs, by either soiling the establishment as a whole and' erecting smaller works, or by the sale of portion of the works.
