HANOVER STREET CHURCH
I The annual report of the Hanover Street 'Baptist Church states: Since our last annual meeting the church has gained in new members: By visitation and'baptism, 2; by transfer, 4. During the same period it has lost: By transfer, 5; by death, 5; and the present roll number is 457, Our people have fully maintained their reputation for generosity during the past year, the total amount raised for all purposes being over £1,936. The debt on the building has been reduced by £192, and with the help of a legacy and certain promises ' will shortly be reduced by a further £175, leaving a balance of £1,622 then owing. The home and foreign missions benefit to the extent of over £665, the great increase in the total amount raised being chiefly in the increased contributions to the mission funds. The_ selfdenial movement accounted for £135 of this amount. The Sunday school suffered through the epidemic, but the numbers on the roll and the average attendance are approximately the same as last year. The infant department is still one of the most interesting of the activities of the school, and its present roll numbers 45: while the junior department, with eight assistants, has 67 scholars. The intermediate or upper school comprises about 120 scholars, with 19 teachers and officers, and includes the Young Women's Bible Class. The Junior Endeavor Society have had an average attendance of SO members. The Young Men's Bible Class have a roll numbering 2b, with an average attendance of 15 for the year. The Young Women's Missionary Sewing Circle have worked to .some purpose each month during the past year, ;md the annual sale of work proved to be a record, as they wero thereby enabled to hand, over to the missionary secretary the sum of 582. The deaconesses have carried on tlieir work in their usual quiet and unobtrusive manner. The Dorcas Society distributed 94 parcels of clothing containing 665 separate garments, and they gratefully acknowledge donations and help from members and friends. Last June a special call came to our pastor to take up work in connection with the New Zealand Alliance. Our sympathies were entirely with our pastor in this matter, and wo recognised his special fitness for this important work of God and humanity ; yet wo did not fully realiee how strenuous or how' long the' fight would be, nor the difficulty of carrying on in our pastor's absence. We have to record our grateful thanks_ to the New Zealand Alliance for their assistance. We greatly regret that events have transpired such that our pastor has felt constrained to resign his work among us in order to fully devote himself to the temperance campaign.
