The belligerents on each side of the Rhine find, themselves with vast and useJess stocks of high explosives. An eminent i-wiss professor, M. De Quervain> has suggested that these stocks may bo made scientifically useful for the'production, of controlled and therefore- artificial earthquakes. He suggests that SO tons be touched off at a time under varying atmospheric conditions, and that all the attendant phenomena be tabulated at those earthquake stations affected. Though the idea at first seems rather ridiculous, he has convinced his own Government of its feasibility and value, for- they have presented him -with 10,OCO kilogrammes of lead and steel to make the "bob of his seismograph pendulum. %
