Though it was known to practically
, everybody yesterday morning that Peace had been signed, the , Mayor of Dunedin refused to act >u ■ regard to the programme which the Peace i Gounmiitoo had mapped out because the ' pence proclamation had not been formally ‘ notified to Mm. As a consequence the marching into town of the Hillside Work- ' shop® bands, for the propose of making a I demonstration fit the Town Hall, was not permitted to be carried out, and the 1 spontaneity winch, peace proceedings in I the early part of the forenoon would have i ensured was wanting. This was the (initial mistake on His Worship's part. But he ,hhuiderod again at the Town Hal! in giving out that the peace celebrations would be commenced on Monday week. The vast assembly, knowing the source of 'the information, accepted it as “official.' 1 ■ ’Now, it had been stated in the daily news- • papers last week—and this was later [information than the Peace Celebrations ( Committee seemingly had —that the oaigi- ! nal programme (the Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday week after tire (signing of peace) had been abandoned, and that the date of the celebrations would be announced in due course. But His Worship disregarded this—again because ho had not been “ offij daily advised.” In our issue of Tuesday last we said “ the British peace dates bad j been definitely and appropriately fbced for j Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, August. 3, 4, and s—the Monday, of Course, being the fifth anniversary of the declaration of war against Germany.”' That abatement, we believe, will be found to be absolutely authentic, ami Now Zealand has agreed to fall into line. It 'depends on whether the Niagara mokes a, quick return to Now Zealand as to the two Leaders—Mr Massey and Sir Joseph Ward—being in the Dominion to share in the celebrations.
