RETROSPECTIVE MARRIED ALLOWANCES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l cannot allow to pass unchallenged the rema.ks of your correspondent Mr Thos, Miller re the above subject. Reference to newspaper files of the conference date fails to reveal any such promise from the Minister of Defence. The Minister admitted that there was an injustice being done in paying the allowances from date of embarkation only, but said something to the effect that there were difficulties owing to the incomplete state of the early records of the camps. I submit, sir, that this statement is not convincing, as every soldier or his wife or widow could easily supply the Minister with full details of the date of entering camp. If it is the Minister’s intention to pay those allowances in full, why does he not make a public statement to that effect, instead of keeping the soldiers and their wives guessing? Onr late Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark) recently said: “Let us. in this time of jubilation, see that wo fail not in our duty to those men who have made it possible for us to rejoice at this time.” Now the way is over, and our men have done their job, is it not up to our citizens to see that it is no longer necessary for the soldiers to fight for their rights in their own country? r r-.. c e, ic . that Clark and our other true patriots may use their inftnp-ino to these allowances paid in full at an early date—l am - c.. Square Dead for the Soldier. July 1.
