The Bishop of Salford! (Dr Casarto l ’!), in the course of a paper on ‘The, Study of Foreign Languages, 1 read to the members of the Manchester Statistical Society, recalled that in previous papers he introduced to English readers the remarkable movembuc which was then taking place in Germany-—the establishment of the “ Seminary for Oriental Languages 11 in Berlin, a distinct effort on the part of Bismarck to extend German diplomatic ami commercial influence in. the East. The work oi the seminary undoubtedly played a great part in the extraordinary development of German trade and influence throughout Asia and Africa during the quarter of a century which followed 1 its establishment. But it was only during the course of the -great war that, ,as the outcome of a Treasury Committee, a Royal Charter of June, 1916, established the School of Oriental Studies in London.. Tho Bishop gave a description of the work of the school, which provides teaching in about 40 languages.
