GROUP XIII RIFLE MEETING
"After n. week of wind and sleet the weather on Saturday was "almost ideal for the Bunedin group rifle meeting. Tho bright sun overhead and the frost on t!.e ground were a combination that those who take up openair sports can appreciate, and the entire absence of wind made Pelhhet Bay range seom like a galfory, so quite a number of our young marksmen bald a day out in more ways than one. The cutrios for <ke meeting constitute a .'record. One hundred and seventy-three competitors fired in each match (an increase" of 136 on the previous best enbrv). Of these 156 were Cadets. It is hoped," for the sake of sport in general, and shooting in particular, that still further increases will be recorded, and that from among-Bt these young bloods there will be found one or two who will be capable of bringing the Dominion Champion Belt back to Otaso. The last time this happened is so far back in the history of the association that few sh.oot.ing men can remember when W.- S. King, then of Ganiaru, brought the trophy to the province. Tho sola object of these meetings is to encourage shooting amongst Territorials and Cadets, and the whole of the Government grant is devoted to prizes, which ore mado as numerous as possible in preference to allotting a few of high value; while the entrance fees are reduced to a bare minimum, sufficient onlv to cover expenses. Any revenue from entries remaining after expenses are paid is put in to swell the prize-list. There must be no " balance in fa-ar.d." In order to carry out the programme in one dav, shooting commenced at 9 a.m., and the 90 competitors who were present then completed the programme by 1 o'clock, when, after aehorl interval, tho firing recommenced for the afternoon party, who finished about half an hour before the light began to fail. The Territorial championship was won bv Private A. C. Holland, who deserves credit for his performance, even though the "field" was somewhat small. The Cadet Championship went to Cadet O. B. Stewart, with the honor of also putting on top score* for the day in both classes. Scores which deserve special mention were possibles in Match TV. at 200 yards by Cadets C B. Stewart and J. A. L. M'Lean and in Match V. at 300 yards by Cadet J. D. Nelson (a fine shoot). Private E. Boultons 35 out of « in rapid was also a good effort.
