GREEN ISLAND COUNCIL
The Green Island Borough Council met last night. The Otago Motor Club invited the members of the council to attend a conference of local bodies at the Dunedin Town Hall on the subject of road making.—The Mayor and Town Clerk were appointed to attend. The Milton Borough Council wrote asking support to a resolution urging the Government to bring into existence a mercantile fleet, in order that exporters might not be at the mercy of shipping combines and kindred monopolies.—lt was agreed to support the proposal. The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce wrote asking the council to support a resolution urging the Government to take control of the main arterial roads in the Dominion.—lt was resolved to support the chamber's proposal. The Tauranga Borough Council wrote asking approval to a suggestion that the peace celebrations be marked by the erection of memorials of a permanent character. —After discussion, it was resolved to support the recommendations of the Tauranga Council. The Otago Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote intimating that £60.000 would be required by levy and' Government subsidy to carry on the board's operations for the current year, and that the apportionment for Green Island was £374 3s Bd. Received. The Green Island School Committee wrote asking the council to atop the nuisance from the work being carried on by Mr Peter Cameron.—lt was resolved to request the Health Department to inspect the works complained of. Mr William Geddes wrote asking the council to metal the road fronting bis premises, on the Boundary road, and to clean out the water tables.—Referred to Works Committee. Mr Trevor Atkinson wrote drawing attention to the almost impassable state of Jameß street, Burnside * Intension.—Referred to Works Committee. The Dunedin Peace Celebrations Executive wrote asking a donation to assist in defraying the cost of the celebrations.—lt was resolved that, as Green Island would hold a celebration of its own, the council could not afford to contribute to other functions of a similar nature. The following committees were appointed :—Finance—Crs F. Jackson (chairman), Tomkins, Smellie, and Christie; Works, Drainage, Cemetery, and Domain— Crs E. Reeve (chairman),'Kane, Mitchell, and Harrison; Lighting and Water—Crs M'Clymont (chairman), Kaler, Eason, and Crimp; Recreation Ground—-Crs Mitchell (chairman)/ Christie, Tomkins, and M'Clymont. Cr Mitchell was appointed Deputy Mayor. It was resolved that £IOO be granted for expenditure on the children's part in the Green Island peace celebrations.
