It is expected that the R.M.S. Makura, which is due at Auckland on Monday evening from Vancouver and way porta, will land a large European and American mail. Advice received by the Union Co. states that the Makura was declared to be a “ clean ship ” by the authorities at Suva, at which port the vessel called yesterday. She is therefore expected to berth at Auckland on Tuesday morning and mails for the South Island will be despatched from there on Tuesday night. The local portion should reach here on Thursday evening next. The following weather report was supplied by Mr Paulin at 2 p.m. to-day;— Strong S.W, to NAY. winds, and cold rain showers. Now that the Public Works staff have vacated the upper floor of the Customhouse building in Dunedin, preparations are being made for the Telegraph' staff to occupy this space with a much-needed extension. No structural alterations in the old building are necessary, and the required refitting will, not take long. It is considered that with this extension the Telegraph Department will be able to carry on for awhile until in the course of time the old building in Princes street, mcistly vacated, is supplanted by a structure of modern type.

One of the present duties of the Public Works Office iu Otago is fighting the floods, or, rather, setting up a system of insurance. Two places are specially occupying the attention of Mr C. J. M’JKenzie (district engineer) and his staff. Chief of these works are the protective works at Gore. Good progress is being made in the preparations for 1 lengthening the traffic bridge and in building the new embankment. The other job of importance is to give the settlers in the Stirling district security, and this is to be done by building a bank at Smith’s, just below Stirling, where the water broke through during the recent rainy spell. The Remuera, with a returning draft, is due at Auckland on Monday morning. She has 81 men for the Otago distinct. If the ship berths on Monday, the Otago men should reach hero on Wednesday evening. The strike of the Green Island miners continues, and there are no indications of a settlement of the dispute. As a result of the falling away of business following the strike, the Green Island Supply Coal Co. has decided to dissolve - partnership. Mr G. G. Ogilvie, the present secretary, being appointed liquidator. Instead of the several proprietories connected with the company continuing to work in combination, each colliery will in future be controlled by its own particular proprietor or proprietors. Fur representative, who will be in Dunedin from Monday morning till Tuesday at 10 o’clock, will dispose of set of high-grade sample fur coats.
