Forecast. The Government Meteorologist (Rev. D. C. Bates) supplied the following at noon to-day : —Northerly wind, moderate to strong, freshening; increasing haze and cloudiness for change; barometer falling; sea moderate; tides good. ARRIVED.—ApriI 30. Aratapu, bqtne. (6.15 p.m.), 123 tons, Grono, from Wellington. May 1. Tarawera, s.s. (3.30 a.m.), 1,993 tons, Williamson from Auckland and Timaru. Stella, s.s. (10.25 a.m.), 269 tons, M'Bride, from Auckland direct. The harquentine Aratapu arrived in the Lower Harbor last evening from Wellington. She discharged a quantity of explosives tliis morning, and was then tawed up to Dumedin and berthed at the Victoria wharf to discharge a full shipment of general cargo. On completion of discharge the Aratapu will load general freight for Wellington. The Tarawera arrived here early this m-orning from Auckland and Timaru,. and was berthed at the Birch street wharf to discharge 800 tons of general cargo. She will sail this evening for Bluff to complete her discharge. The Tarawera will afterwards load produce at Bluff, Oamaru, and Lyttelton for Auckland. The Breeze is now expected to arrive here about noon to-morrow from Lyttelton. She will be despatched to-morrow night for Timaru, Lyttelton, Picton, and Wanganui. The Kaituna left Wellington at 7 p.m. yesterday for West-port, where she will load coal for Auckland. The Stella arrived at Dunedin shortly after 10 a.m. to-day from Auckland direct, after a fine-weather passage of 4d 20h. She brought a full cargo of scrap iron, after discharge of which she will load general cargo for Wellington. The vessel will subsequently lead at Wellington for Dunedin. Captain W. J. M'Bride, the chief officer, is in temporary command of the Stella, in place of Captain I!. Hamilton, who has come ashore on holiday leave. The Kaiapoi is fixed to leave Melbourne to-day -with general cargo, for Bluff. Dunedin, Lyttelton, arul: Wellington. The Kakapo will leave We*tnort about Saturday wit'h a cargo of -coal for discharge at Bluff and Dunedin. The Kini is to leave Greymouth on Saturday with a full load of coal for Bluff and Dunedin.

The Waipori left Ne-weasrtle yasterjdnjfc coal laden, for Auckland. The Kowhai left Napier yestenday for Wellington and Greymouth. She will load at the latter -port for LyWeitotL The Rosamond left Wellington a| 1.30 p.m. yeaterday with genial cargo for Lyttelton and Dimedin. She is due hem to-morrow, and will sail on Saturday for Oamaru and Timaro to load produce for Napier and Giaborne. A moderate sea was running on the- few at Greymouth to-day. Westport rajported a smooth ma, on the bar. The Kotare is due here about Sandfly with a load of iron rails and machinery from Port Pegasus (Stewart- Island). She is fixed to sail on Tuesday for Bluff and Invercargill. Tho island steamer Flora, -was due at Auckland this morning from the Eastern Pacific. She has on board a latrge cargo of phosphate rock and fruit from Rawitonga. The Waimarino is to leave Wellington to-morrow for Lyttelton and Timaru to load for Auckland. The steamer City of Newcastle, which is loading at Lyttelton, will leave that port early next week for London. The New Zealand Shipping Company • advise that the Hororata, which Is completing her loading at Wellington, is expected to sail from there to-morrow for London via Panama. The Devon, which is due at Wellington on May 15 from Egypt, -will load first at Lyttelton and afterwords at Wellington for Liverpool. The vessel is to sail from Wellington at the end of May, Home-ward-bound via Panama. Tho New Zealand Shipping Company advise that the Kaikoura, now loading at Napier, is to leave there on Saturday next for Tokomaru Bay for further loading. From the latter port the vessel will return to Wellington to complete her cargo for London. Th? Melanesian Mission &teamer Southern Cross, ■which is undergoing an. extensive overhaul at Auckland, is not expected to sail on hor official trip to the islands for some time. Repairing operations have been delayed by tho non-arrival of some iron beams from Sydney. These hftv© been taken to Wellington, and are awaiting transhipment from there to Auckland. Tho Westmoreland is due at Bluff about the middle of May from Australia to commence loading there for Liverpool. The vessel will go from Bluff to Wellington to fill up, and is to leave th© latter port at tho end of May for livarpool via Panama.

THE FERRY SEEVICE. The Maori arrived at Lyttelton at 7 a.m. to-day from Wellington, and mails and passengers connected with She first express for the south. MAITAI BREAKING UP. The officers of the Paloona, which arrived at Wellington on Saturday morning last from San Francisco via Earotonga, state that the wrecked steamer Maitai, on the reef at Barotonga, is etill fighting against the ravages of the sea-. Her stern has practically disappeared, but amidships she remains, fairly intact. Her bows have broken away from just forward of amidships. WILLBCHEA TO LOAD. It is announced that the Willocbxa, now refitting at Port Chalmers, will leave there about the middle of next week for Wellington, where she wall commence loading for London under the auspices? of the Shaw, fiavill, and Albion Line. The vessel will sail from Wellington about the middle of May, and will proceed Homewards via Australian ports and Capetown. AMERICAN 'SCHOONER ALERT. It is understood thaij Captain Hansen, master and part owner of the American schooner Alert, which has been detained at Dunedin since April 1 pending the settlement of a claim for £1,400 by Messrs A. S. Paterson and Co. for alleged damage done to the vessel's cargo of case oil, intend? to make a counter-claim, for demmratre at the rate of 150dol per day as from April 1. Such a claim now amounts to clo*e on £9OO. BHAMO FEOM GLASGOW. The steamer Bhamo arrived at Wellington yesterday afternoon from Glasgow and Auckland. She is to leave Wellington to-morrow afternoon direct for Dunedin. where she should arrive on Sunday. Messrs Murray. Roberts, and Co., tho local agents, n'dvise that the Bhamo will discharge several hundred tons of general car so, which will include cargo for transhipment to Lytteltou. Tho Bhamo will aft.fn-.vaids load Homeward cargo at Port Chalmers, Oamaru, and Wellington.
