PARISH MEETINGS

ST. MARTIN'S CHURCH. ■" 3ie annual meeting of the parishioners' xi St. Martin's Church, North-east Valley, was held last night. The vicar (the Rev. X. A. Fribers) presided. The vestry's report stated that they had commenced the current year's work w'hen the church was without the services of an apnomt-xi vicar. Indebtedness was expressed to the late vicar (the_ Ven. Archdeacon Woodthorps) for his assiduous attention to the church services. The general services were arranged for chiefly by soliciting the.good offices of the Rev. C. H. Statham, who had been a great standby oa so many previous occasions. _ The appointment of t-no Rev. N. A. Friberg. of Nelson diocese, to the vicariate of St. Martin's is recorded with pleasure. Mr Friberg and family have already made their presence in the "Valley much appreciated. The revenue for the year shows a decrease of £llO (approximately), but has been sufficient to meet ordinary requirements and increase slightly the credit balance. The new school building _fund was increasing. Building conditions chiefly had. caused a delay in operations. There was every prospect cf an early sta-rt being made with the erection of the new building. It was with great regret that j the resignation was recorded of the honorary- choirmaster, Mr 11. Drake, who had been associated with the choir for upwards of 30 years. Mr Ernest Marryatt was appointed to the vacancy. The branch of the C.E.M.S. hud been successfully carried on. Votes of thanks were passed to the vicar, to Mr Tewsley, and to Mrs Petersen (a veteran who has done service for the church for ready 50 years), and a resolution was passed that a small present j be given to her on her retirement from the work of collecting and for working for the Ladies' Guild. ST. PETER'S, CAVERSHAM. The annual meeting of parishioners was held in the Parish Hal! last evening. The report stated, inter alia: The general j offertories suffered a serious loss through j the epidemic, and in order to make this I good a special appeal was made, the response being such that the offertories 1 finished up tor the year very satisfactorily, | being an increase on the previous year. The liabilities carried forward from lastyear were heavy. Notwithstanding this, «ve have been able to pay off the extra ;ost due on the Sunday Scliool Hall (£63). reduce the bank balance by £7O. and pay£loo off the vicarage mortgage. These sums, together with rates ami'insurance i£l4j made a total of £248 wiped off our liabilities. The stipend fund collections show a slight falling off. This is accounted for by the epidemic and the removal from the, parish of subscribers. The envelope collections show a slight increase, but could still be improved. The Vestry record their very sincere appreciation of ! the splendid work done by the members ! of the Ladies' Guild during the past year, ! the results being ecpal to. if not better i than, the- average ot previous years. ,| The vicar's report made reference to several encouraging features, -notably a ■ great increase in the number of regular ; communicants and in the number of chil- [ dren attending the Sunday schools and I catochism. It also referred to the good work accomplished by Sister .Boys since her appointment, and to the marked success that bad attended Mr V. Fraer's work as choirmaster. Miss Fa veil has again given great satisfaction as organist, j fie also expressed his gratitude to the ' Aurchwardens and Vestry, the members jf the choir, the Servers' Guild, and all i rrho f.ad helped in the parish.' j Before Qroceediiig -with the business a ' vote of condolence was passed with the relatives of the late Mr Titchener, and reference was made to the death of Mr George Gray Russell, a benefactor of the ; church. ! The attendance was very large, and the j meeting proved to be one o,f the most en- | thusiastic and sociable held in the parish. '- The reports and balance-sheets were adopted, pleased comment being bestowed apon the splendid financial results as dis- , closed by the year's workings. The Chairman (Rev. J. L. Mortimer) referred to the good results achieved from every point of view during the past year, and suggested -the formation of a social clnb now that the war was over, a suggestion that was received with great , enthusiasm by the meeting. | The election of church officers resulted | as follows: —Vicar's churchwarden, Mr L. ! Deans Ritchie; people's warden. Mr A. J, Gall; vestrymen—Messrs Gf. Saxton. J. G. H. Briggs.'W. A. Pargiter, F. Mace, R. •B. Hill, T. Hurd, A. V. Winchester. H. l)e C. M'Arthur, P. J. Priest, and B. "Wingfield; auditor, Mr M'Arthur. After the business was disposed of tha meeting resolved itself into a very enjoy-

able social. A short but excellent profranvme had been arranged by Mr W. i-aer. The following contributed it-ems: Fraer, Tapley, and Master Wilson (songs), and Mr M'Connell (recitation). Supper, provided by the ladies, was, S3 usual, ranch appreciated.
