Mrs P. C. Torrance, of Park terrace, Kensington, has received word that her youngest son, Private A. Torrance, is reluming by the Kia Ora. Private Torrance volunteered during the early part of the war, and left with the sth Reinforcements, who landed on Gallipoli. He is one of the four brothers who went on active service. Dick and John returned home by the Briton. Gordon died in Franco from pneumonia. The Rev. W. F. and Mrs Kennody left by the Monowai this afternoon for Auckland. They purpose proceeding to California via Honolulu and Vancouver in July. A casualty list issued last evening stated that Ernest Oliver, of the Wellington mounted troop, a son of Mr W. Oliver, of Woodville, had been accidentally killed, The relatives of Lance-corporal F. D. Moore have received word that he is returning by the Rimutaka. He enlisted at the age of 19. and left New Zealand in November, 1915, with the hospital ship Marama. Later he transferred to the field hospital in France, and after considerable service there ho again transferred to the field, where he gained the Military Medal. At the eighteenth anniversary social of the North-east Valley Baptist Church, hold last night, Mr G. Calder, senior deacon, on behalf of the congregation, presented the pastor of tho church, Rev. S. Morris, who is leaving for England'- shortly, with a travelling bag and a purse of money. Our fellow-townsman, Rev. T. Russell, has received information by the recent mail from Homo that his brother, Colonel Russell, D.5.0., has been made Companion of the. Order of St. Michael and St. George, in recognition of his services as Director of Military Transport in France during the war. Miss M. G- Hughes has been appointed seventh assistant at Macandrew Road School. Miss Agnes Blair has been appointed mistress ot the Outram School. Mr A. H. King, formerly a member of the North Otago Referees' Association, has applied to join the Otago Referees' Association. Mr King, who is in the railway service, has received a shift to Dunedin from Oamaru. It was announced by cable recently that Mr Geoffrey Dawson Jiad resigned the editoi'ship of 'The Times,' in which position he succeeded Mr G. E. Buckle in August, 1912. In a letter to Mr John Walter, Mr Dawson wrote:—"l need not trouble you with details of the correspondence leading finally to my decision. It is a step to which I had in any case been making up my mind for some weeks past—ever since it became dear that Lord Northwas constantly dissatisfied with the policy of ' The Times ' on the ground that it differed from his own expressions of opinion in other newspapers. Nothing is worse for a newspaper than any sorb of internal friction, and therefore I wish to relinquish my position at tho earliest date convenient to everyone concerned." Mr I Homy Wickham Steed has 'been appointed to succeed Mr Dawson. Dr S. Herbert, who has been stationed in Rotonia as a balneological expert for the past 18 years, will be leaving the town in aboui a week or 10 clays to board the lonic for England, with his family, having resigned from the Government service. He is at present very busy formulating plans for many' projected improvements in the near future. Mr G. R.
