CITY POLICE COURT. (Before J. R. Bartholomew, Esq., S.M.) Drunkenness.—Letitia Berkley, Ross Barrowman, and two first offenders were each fined 20s or 48 hours’ imprisonment. An old-age pensioner was convicted and discharged. Richard M’Pborson. a prohibited person, charged with drunkenness, and with procuring liquor, was fined 10s or 48 hours on each charge.
Assaulting a Constable.—David M’Donald, a man who bore tho marks of heavy punishment, pleaded guilty to using threatening behaviour in Stafford street, and also to assaulting Constable Smaill.— Sub-Inspector Mathieson said that accused was engaged in a fight in Stafford street and Constable Smaill, who was in plain clothes, separated tho combatants. The other man went away, but tho accused twice struck the constable, who afterwards closed with and arrested, him. —Accused said ho did not know Smaill was a constable.—He was fined 20s, in default seven days’ imprisonment, for breach of the peace, and 40s, in default 14 days for assaulting the constable. Time 'to find the money was refused, tho sub-inspector stating that accused was a man of bad character.
Charges of Theft.—George Albert McDonald, a young man, was brought up on 11 charges of stealing the following articles ;—A bag containing an overcoat and other clothing valued at £4, a razor valued 7s 6d, a rug valued £3. an umbrella valued 7s 6d. a cigarette case and fountain pen valued 10s, a revolver valued £l, a "lady’s gold watch valued £4, an electric torch valued 7s 6d, an overcoat valued 10s, a band ring valued 15s, a badge valued Is, a lady-’a gem ring valued £B, a rug valued £2, a pair of brushes valued 10s. and a bicycle valued £5 10s.—The sub-inspector said it was suggested that accused was not in his right mind, and he asked for a remand; IT is Worship remanded accused for seven days for medical examination. —Austin Writ. Tho?. Holbrook pleaded guilty to a. charge that on November 29 ho stole £3, the property of John Potze. A letter from Dr Ncwlands on tho subject of this accused was received, which the Rev. F. G. Gumming snputemented by tho statement that from inquiries he had made, ho was satisfied that the man should be medically examined. It was apnarent that he was scarcely rwpcmsiblc for what he was doing.—Accused was remanded seven days for medical examination.
Remanded.—Andrew Henry Gunn and John Clark (Mr Hanlon), separately chanced with at Green Island indecently assaulting a givl under’ the ago of 16 veal’.", were, further remanded for a week, the same bail ns before being allowed. An Obstinate Girl.—Alary Elizabeth Thompson was charged with being an idle and disorderly person, having insufficient lawful means of support. The Chief Detective said that ncccnacd was 19 years of ago. Owing tn her dirty habits the father had to break nn his home and put bin three young children out tn beard. Accused wa.s found a position in York place, but ph« proved unsatisfactory. She' was placed in another position, but she would not do what she was told, and she stormed out late at night. She was next given n, ?.'tnnt : on in a. factory, where, sho couh-1 have earned 35s a week, but slio would net work, and was a hindrance to tho other girls. She was a very obstinate girl.—Accused was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called unon, a. condition being that she remained in the Mount (Magdalen Home for twelve months.
