SHORTAGE OF COAL
TEMPORARY RELIEF.
[Special to the ‘ Stab. ’]
CHRISTCHURCH, December 9,
One result of tho influenza epidemic is that coal supplies are extremely scarce locally, and if the official Coal Committee had not been instrumental in procuring 250 tons from the Admiralty stocks at Lyttelton many institutions 'and householders would have been absolutely without fuel. The difficulty was caused through the cessation of 'Vest Coast shipping, there being an interval of nearly three weeks without a consignment reaching Lyttelton. Ans!ralian shipping was also affected. The position has been saved somewhat by tho arrival during the week of thico vessels from the West Coast. A Newcastle steamer also arrived on Sal nr day, but it is understood that the trade will have to share in this consignment with the Railway Department. It will probably take some little while before matters resume normal.
