Admiral Beatty, in a speech to the crew of the battle-cruiser Lion on the eve of the escorting of the German warships from Rosyth to Scapa Flow, said : "It is a pitiable and horrible sight to see great ships following a British light cruiser to internment. The sides of the old_ Lion, which have been well hammered in the past, must have ached, as I ached, and you ached, to give them another taste of what we intended for them; but their humiliating end was the proper end for an enemy who proved themselves lacking in chivalry at sea.
