SCUFFLE IN A MELBOURNE COUNCIL. A violent scene took place at a meeting of the South Melbourne Council the other evening. Debating a committee’s recommendation, Councillor J. Baragwanafch said that Councillor T. Crainc, who opposed the recommendation, hud voted tor it in committee. Councilor Crainc : I sav von are a —— liar. Urged bv his colleagues, Councillor Crainc finally -withdrew the words, but he remarked, sot to voice, as ho glared at Councillor Baragwanath : “ von!” Councillor Baragwanath: “Don’t say that to me Old, as I am, I will not tolerate it from yon or any other man! At this Councillor Craine rushed past Councilors Cockbill and M‘Arthur, and reaching Councilor Baragwanath, assumed a fighting attitude. Councillor Baragwanath rose. Fists flew, there was a scuffle, and the next moment Councillor C’-ainc was lying upon his Iwk over two chairs. Other councillors got between the combatants, and tho Mayor shouted above the din that the mooting was adjourned for five minutes. Later. Councillor Craine tendered an apology for his words, and for any auction taken by him whilst feeling aggrieved. Councillor Baragwanath : Councillor Grain© will have to go further, or I will. H© struck at me, and when down did not forget to use his feet. Councillor Pago : Councillor Cra>no has apologised. Why try to stir him up again ? The business of tho meeting was then proceeded with.
