NEW YORK, September 29. _ It is reported, that 1,700 persons, mostly former Russian a,rmy officers, are being held hostages for tiho lives of Bolshevist officials. About 1,946 Englishmen are imprisoned in the fortress* of Peter and Paul on the pretence that they were implicated in a plot to kill Uritsky. There are also 20 French, citizens in the iamo prison. The conditions in the farta-ess could not bo worse. The prisoners are crowded' in> groups of 15 to 20 iiiii small; damp cells, m which only two or three are able to> lie down at the same time. They are not permatted exercise, have no bedding, and § tactically no food. Forty-four O/echolovaks who had been captured were found imprisoned, starving to death.
