She Douglas Haig reports : Operations on the Cambrai battle-front progressed farorably. On our right tie Fifth and Forty-second Divisions had lieary fighting last night about Beancamp Ridge, where the enemy counter-attacked strongly. In the morning .they overcame the enemy resistance in this locality and pressed forward two miles beyond, capturing the highlyorganised defences called the ' ; highlands "
and "Welsh" ridges. The latter success ■was extended southwards, as wo captured Gouzeancoart. The Sixty-second Yorkshire division captured Marcoing and progressed southeastward of the town. The Fifth battalion of the Duke of Wellington's Own forced the crossings of the Canal de l'Escant at Marcoing, and established; it.nelf in the German defences on the east bank. Northwards of them the Second and Fifty-seventh Lancashire Divisions cleared tho west bank of tho canal as far north as La Folio Wood and captured Noyeßas-sur-E-scaut, Cantaing, and Fon-taine-Notxe-Dame. The Lancashires are progressing eastward of Fontalne-Notre-Dame, co-operating with the Canadians northward of the Bapaume-Cambrai road. Here tho enemy resisted strongly, and lest heavily in killed and prisoners. Northward of the Arras-Cambrai road t1.9 Canadians and English troops are steadily advancing on the east and north. Strang hostile counter-attacks at Raillenccurfc last night were driven hack with ; loss. To-day the Canadians took posseslion of Itaillencou'ri and Sailly, also the trench system running through" these vil- ■ lages. More nortnward the Fifty-sixth London : Division entered Palluel.
