Thirteenth Day.—Wednesday. The competitions as competitions came to an end last night, the three remaining nights of the festival being set- apart for demonstration concerts by prize-winners. There was a fair attendance at Burns Hall. Mr James Rennie occupied tho chair. Before the sacred solo Mrs Montague retired, beim fatigued after the afternoon concert, and Miss Adonta Aitken played the rest of the accompaniments Results : PIANO DUO, eight hands. Open to all. Own selection. Misses Lena Geddes, Nellie Varney, Ivy Hume, and Mr Alfred Geddes ... 1 Misses Ida Lungley, Ruby Hudson, D. Gardner, 0. Gordon 2 The winners played one of the Hungarian rhapsodies j the others, ' The Merry Wives of Windsor.' Mr Page said that the winners gave tho cleaner and better performance. RECTTATTON. girls 14 and under 16 years. 'The Wanderer' (Eli one Field). First prize, medal or book. Runa Cox. 180 ~ 1 Nellie - "• 2 Mollie Williamson. 172 - 3 Also recalled : Kath'een Dnnatan. Other competitors: Daisy Catto, Winifred R Wood, Vera Rae, Thyra Knight, Mary Meek, Owen Goldsmid. Rose Moore, Hazel Miller, Violet Hobbs, Doris Lucas Mr W. R. Brrgb- the judge, said that the piece was a coldly didactic bit of philosophical contemplation, more suited to men of 40 or 60 th=n to crirls o{ 14 and 16 » but i the girls did their best. VOCAL SOLO, gentlemen. Open to all. I Operatic air and song, each own selection. Mr Arthur W. Alloo ('Non Pin Andral' and "The Arrow and the Song') ... 1 Mr F. H. Taylor, of Tuturau ('Pagliaod' prologue and '.ln Summertime on Bredon') -• •■• •■• ••• 2 Mr Stanley A. Hall ('The Toreador and '0 Promise Me') 3 Mr Tavlor sang both . without music. Mr Alloo' used the -music for the Italian aria. Mr Hall had the music each time. Mr Alloo's accompaniments were played by Miss Gawn. Mr Page said that Mr Hall had the advantage over the other competitors, but he left too much to chance. Mr Taylor sang the song better than the opera air. Mr Alloo's opera air was better sung than the others j his song also. CLASSIC DANCING, Grecian school. Boys or girls tmder 14. First prize, medal or book. Marie Major (Garland Dance) ... ... 1 The only competitor. Mrs J. L. Mortimer said that this was rather a new style of dancing, and she thought tho little girl did her dance very nicely. PIANO SOLO, 10 and under 12 years. No. 3 of ' Six Christmas Pieces ' (Mendelssohn). First prize, medal or book. J. H. De Clifford 1 M. M. M'Donald „ 2 Colin Stoneham 3 Other competitors: Laura Himmel, S. Bingham, Aileen Young, Rene Murray. Frances Iggo, Sadie Munro, Edith R. Moore, Zeala M'Connell, Phyllis Anderson, Neta M'Lennan, Katie Brunton, Patrick Y. Wales. Mr Page remarked that the performance of the boy who won was really quite remarkable for technique, pedalling, and concentration. The little girl placed second did not give the same thought or show equal restraint. SACRED SOLO, soprano, amateurs. ' Lead, Kindlv Light' (Liddle). Key E. Miss J. Miller (Brichton) 1 Miss Marguerite Wilson 2 Miss Muriul Jacobs 3 The judge did not comment. RECITATION, boys 14 and under 16. ' The Union Jack' (Ed. Shirley). First prize, medal or book. Norman Scurr, 172 1 The only competitor. PIANO DUET, amateurs. 'Allegro Brilliant' (Mendelssohn). Miss Hannah Spiro and Miss Isabel Maxwell 2 No other entry. Mr Page said it was rather a disappointing perform nee. There were many difficulties in the piece, and in its performance a little restraint and thought were wanted. BURNS SONG, amateurs, ladies or gentlemen. Own selection. First prize, one guinea, donated by Burns Club. Mr H. Donald (Oamaru), ' Scots Wha Hae' 1 Mr H. G. M'Clymont (Milton), 'Scots Wha Hae ' 2 Mr Frank H. Taylor (Tuturau) was also recalled. He sang 'Annie Laurie.' Other competitors: Miss Muriel Eagar, Miss Elspeth Denholm, yisa B. Oakley, Miss Dons Steel. Mr Page said that Mr Taylor could not be awarded the prize, for the committee had noted the fact that ' Annie Laurie' is not a Burns song.
