OBITUARY

An old identity of Otago, in the person of Mrs Jean 15.arr.ett-. passed away at Duiiedin yesterday. Mrs Bametfc was a daughter of -a soldier, Sergeant-major Alexander Brainier, who was wounded in the- battle of Waterloo, and she lias six grandsons serving in the present war, one of whom—Private It. R. won the Military Medal. Mrs Barnctt arrived at Port Chalmers in the Strathmcre in 1856. Sho was born at Aberdeen on the 14th March, 1822. and was married to Richard Henry Cumberbeach, a. shoemaker, of Manchester, .in 1850. Mr Cumberbeach died on the Strath more, and was buried at sea when about halfway out to New Zealand, leaving lier with four children, aged from one to five years. In 1853 she married Mr Henry Baxnett, and lived for a short time at Moeraki, being taken there in a bullock dray. Her husband subsequently took up land at Waikmiaiti, to whic". place tho family re-, moved in a surf boat about the year 1860, the children being kept bnay on ths journey bailing the wafer out of old Jack Hughes's leaky boat. Mrs Burnett resided in Waikmiaiti for over half a. century, and she is to be buried on Wednesday at the side of her husband, who died there in 1800. Mrs Harnett (had a good knowledge of i.uxsing. and was at the call of all the sick of the neighborhood until there was a resident physician in the district. Mr Young was a. member of the committees of the Taieii and the Otago A. and. P. Societies. He served for many years on the. Mosjriel Town B«>nrd, raid was a member of the T-aieri River Board. Mr Young was married in 1880 to a. daughter of the kt-t-e Mr John Ninimo, of East Taieri. One of the oldcßt residents of Auckland, Mr John Hill, of Orey Lynn, died on Tuesday, aged 82. Mr Kill, who was born at Ballynahineh. County Down, Ireland, arrived in Auckland bv the ship Jane Giftord in October. 1842.' With his father ho went to California in 1819, taking part in the gold rush. His father died at S-sn Francisco, and Mr Hill returned to Auckland in 1853, taking part in the Thames. Gabriel's flully. and West Coast gold rushes. sons have been on active service. One was killed at Oallipoli. another, though twice wounded at Gallipoli. is --filial the front, and the third returned invalided, after 10 months' active service.
