White, 12 pieces. White to play and mate in two moves. 2Ktkt4; 1B1KP3; blKfc2pPl; r4k2; r2piPUl; bQIp3P; 3P4; 4R3. SOLUTION OF PROBLEM No. 973. Key move : B-Kt 5. GAME No. 1,181. Petroff Defence. (Notes by F. J. Lee.) White, Mr Common; Black, llev. G. W. Burnell. 1 P-K 4 P-K 4 2 Kt-K B 3 Kt-K B 3 .' 3 P-Q 4 P-Q 4 4Px K P In this variation of the PetroiT I think Kt x P here slightly preferable to I' i K P. Kt s P 5 B-Q 3 Kt-Q B 3 6 Castles This move (allowing the pinning of the let) gives Black, I think, an early advantage in position. Instead, 6 B x Kt, P x B; 7 Q x Q ch, Kt x Q or K x Q ; 8 Kt-Kt 5, and White is at, no disadvantage. B-K Kt 5 7 R-K sq Resulting- in the loss of the K P in a few moves, after which White never recovers lost {.'round. B-K B4 at this point would probably have made a better fight, followed soon by Q Kt-Q 2. B-Q B 4 3 B-K 3 Best now. If 8B x Kt, Px B; 9Q x Q ch, R x Q; 10 E x P, B x Kt, and Black wins easily. B x B 9 R x B Castles ...Probably best, as White must develop, ~-,,1 m w i rocprrrs h : s KR in action on the king's square to push the attack home. 10 Kt-Q R 3 There is no scope that I c-n see for utilising the Kt from this square. The moro natural-lookin? move— : .e., O Kt-Q 2—seems preferable. If then Kt x Kt; 11 Q x Kt, B x Kt; 12 P x B, Q-Kt 4ch ; 13 K-R sq, and White has some prospects of attack. R-K an v " v -> t. ... T-rt 12 B x B B x P ...Come iiiar. Biack is now a pawn to tho good, and the better position, also. 13 Q-K sq P-B 4 14 K-Q sq Q-K 2 15 P-Q B 4 Quite fatal, but I fn.il to see a satisfactory move for White. Black now wins in elegant sfylo by means of the all-powerful passed Q P. P-Q 5 16 R-K 2 R-Q so 17 P-K Kt 3 P-Q 6 18 R-K 3 P-Q 7 19 Q-B sq Kt-K Kt 4 20 B-Q sch R(Q sq) s B 21 P x R R x R 22 Kt-B 2 R-K 8 If P x R, Q x P ch wins easily. 23 Resigns
