They recall the extraordinary fact that he, was a mum her of the House of Commons for 22 years, yet he was never offered anv office, nor even asked to serve on anv committee. His political talents were only discovered utter the outbreak of the war.

During the evening several speeches wore made by tho individual members of tho wharf f.uHoms staff, ami iho speakers referred to tns good qualities and comradeski]) of the guest in all libs connections with the Customs work of the port. Songs wore contributed by Mcs.-.rs G. 13, Brocket and, F. fj. Partridge, and Mr H. L>. Colgravo enlivened die proceeding.; with, a recitation. Private Smith, who was lhe recipient of a handsome wrist watch and siuVtv razor. replied in bis witty ana merry rpa.ili.ier. Private Smith is attached to tho 41st Reinforcements, and will Rave on Monday on his return to camp. Debt- of I!onor (wife and self) forwards ■25 for iho wounded .soldiers and £1 For Serbian relief.
