OBITUARY

.Mr "William R. Adams died at his homo near Papatowai last week, aged 73. Mr Adaraa was bom in Devonshire, Cuming to the Dominion in his youth. For a tune ho followed gold dicing in Australia, in the early days of Otago Harbor he was actively engaged in the lightering business, and also in the coastwise trade, with his stepfather (the late George Campbell, _of Oamaru). Afterwards he removed to K:ikanui, and for years undertook contract eartfng and ploughing there. While at Ivakanui he married .Miss Dunlop, and some 12 years later he took up a bush farm in the T.ihahopa Valley, and resided there for over 27 years. He w.is one of the first four selectors of the backwoods. His family comprised seven children, of whom live survive him. Mrs David Dev.ar, who died Inst week at Gore at the residence of her daughter (Mrs Harlandi, v.-as a pioneer of note, having arrived in Otago in .April, 1043, with one of the "two first ships," the Philip Lning, her age at that time being four years (says the 'Ensign'). Her maiden name was Jane Marshall, and her parents w-ere among the emigrants from Paisley, Scotland, who settled at Dm.edin at the locality long known as '" Little Paisley," but afterwards the site of the, old Southern Cemetery. Deceased was married at .Halfway Rush bv the Rev. Dr Rurns. and thereafter settled on a farm in the Tokomairiro Plain, subsequently removing to .Milton. Mr and Mrs Dc.var woe .unong the. first- settlers in the Callins. boreal, going there tinder Mr Maem-drew's original homestead scheme. The deceased was very v-ell known and popular in the Rattnui district, beiiiL* employed as a nurse in many homes there. L-ater Mr and Mrs Dewar lived at Gore, where Mr Dewar predeceased his wife by three v^ars.
