DESERT GOLD V. BIPLANE
THE THREE-YEAR-OLD COLT SCRATCHED. KEEN PUBLIC DISAPPOINTMENT. [Special to the ‘ Stah.’j PALMERSTON NORTH, April 16, Mr G. D. Greenwood arrived here at 4.30 p.m. to-day .and Mason, his trainer, scratched Biplane three hours later. The place is crowded with visitors from ail parts of the Dominion, and several Australians also made a fruitless journey to see the meeting of the two great “ cracks." Keen disappointment was expressed when it was announced that Biplane had been withdrawn. CHRISTCHURCH, “Argus,” in to-night’s ‘Star,’ says:— The opinion has been freely expressed during tbe last day or two by more than one Riccarton trainer that Biplane is by no means a sure starter for the Awapuni Gold Cup. In support of this contention it is stated that the Comedy King colt was reported to lia.vo been off bis feed after taking part in tbe Challenge Stakes. xtdvice from Palmerston North states that Biplane’s scratching for the Gold Cup is duo to the fact that the colt got a slight cold, and Mason considers he was not fit to run out 10 furlongs. It is unlikely Biplane and Desert Gold will meet on the second day, as Davis, the mare’s trainer, states she will not start in tho six-furlong event. ,
