THE BOWLING TOURNAMENT
TO-DAY’S PLAY ABANDONED. At a meeting at midday of the Tournament Executive Committee it was decided tlxat there should be no play to-day, as the rain was still falling. In order to ovoi'talce the arrears caused by this delay it was resolved to abandon the match North v. South Island fixed for to-morrow, also ,P . rve *'lndies’ Day” on the Saturday flowing, This will leave to-moiTow free tor the continuation of the Pairs. The formal opening will be dropped. It -was resolved that to complete sections mree games of 16 heads, with a time limit of two hours, should be played to-morrow, cn ga ™° ,’ wall s tarb at 8.50 a.m. Should there bo but two ties in a section one game of 16 heads (two hours’ limit) will bo played ; if more than two ties games of 11 heads will be plaved. If both' sections on a green product straight-out winners a game of 21 heads will be played to find the green-winner. In the case of there being any section ties the final game for green-winner will consist of 16 heads All unfinished games in the fourth round must _ bo decided before 8.30 to-morrow morning. NOTES ON THURSDAY’S PLAY. [By Measurer,] With, the best of intentions the Tournament Executive resolved to relax the sternness of the time limit and allow players to go in a free-and-easy style. A time-table was suggested by which the Pairs should start at 8.30 a.in., the second at 10.45, the third at 2 p.m., and the fourth at 4.15 p.m. TTiis was reasonably considered to allow comfortable time even for the stow ones. The result was, in some cases, ludicrous. In one game 14 heads were burnt and three and l arquarter hours occupied. In two other games 10 heads were burnt in each. The consequence was that after 12 hours’ play in some cases the fourth game was not finished. On the Caledonian Green on one rink the second game was not finished till 2.3o—that is, six bourn after the start. No big tournament could be finished at all if this state of tilings wore not altered, and the executive have decided to allow and enforce a time limit of two hours for future pairs games. ' In one or two cases yesteaday slight confusion resulted from players using bowls not, marked to distinguish their owner. When bowls of similar appear* ance and plain discs are used! by both sid<M the situation becomes very obscure at times. 1 have not heard of any startling form displayed so far, though several wellknown couples are doting all they have been asked. A very fine game was played on St. Hilda Green when M. and Y. Oasey (Ponsonby) met Holliday and Kershaw (Linwood). The Aucklanders early got two or three points ahead, and had to play their very best to keep them. Leads would send up toucher after toucher ; then the two skips would alter tilings in their turn. The game between the Caseys and Wesney and Hain (both couples unbeaten so far) was interesting- as far as it went, the former being 2 up at the 12th head. Then both pairs agreed to postpone further proceedings, so that there is another bit to overtake. ■ There were a couple of big scores. Parker (Auckland) put on 39 (including a 7 and two 6’s) to Todd’s (Caversham) 19. At one time the score was 39 to 7. Another big lead -was secured by M’Dougall (Christchurch), whose card read 46 to Rhodes’s (N.E.Y.) 5. A point referred to an umpire; Kitty was in the ditch, a bowl of each side close to the edge, the -shot doubtful. A drive to take the enemy bowl out missed its object, struck the bank, rebounded to the green, and displaced the bowl aimed at. It could not be replaced to the satisfaction of both parties, and the umpire wisely order edi another head. The executive of the Commercial Travellers and Warehousemen’s Association have kindly oitored to visiting bowders during their stay in Dunedin the privileges of their commodious club. This offer will be appreciated
