TAILORS’ AWARD

A LIBERAL CLAUSE. Speaking to a representative of the Christchurch ‘Press’ on Tiicsday, Mr F. R. Cooke, secretary of the Tailors’ Union, drew attention to a clause in the Otao-o and Southland Operative Tailors and Shop Tailorosses’ industrial award, tiled on December 17, 1917, and coining into force on February 4, 1918. It is os foEows: “Where there is a normal average output by the weekly employee, and the weeklv employee makes more than that amount in the, o/xbnary working hours of any one week, such employee shaE be entitled to additional wages for such week for 'such extra work, proportionate, to the extra, work done in comparison _wit!i the norma! average output, together 'with, an additional 20 per cent, on such extra work.” ’ This, said Mr Cooke, was the first clause of the kind ever introduced into a New Zealand award. , He thought it probable that it had been inserted to counter-bal- . ance a provision in the same award for the subdivision of labor, or the team system, which had not formerly been allowed in the bespoke trade. ~ * V
