The luck of a Chinaman! A Chinese greengrocer at New Plymouth is reported to have won more than £4OO at the Stratford races on January 2. Among his bets were three tickets on Speedwell Mac which romped homo in the'hurdles and paid over half a century. A man who had observed this particular Chinaman collecting dividends after each race followed him to the ticket window, and asked the seller for “the same as the Chinaman got.” It was the seventh race, and he was handed one ticket on No. 9 and one on No. 10. No. 9 (Lady Mylchrest) won, the dividend being nearly a double-figure one. and No._ 10 ran second, and also gave a substantial return. Mr G. M. Reed, of Trentham—fatTier of the well-known horsemen, Ashley, Roy and Con Reed—died on Thursday last. Ab_ the conclusion of the Wyndham Meeting Mr A. Chisholm, of Otautau bought Bon from Messrs M'Combe and Griflfo. In connection with the Southland races last week the dividend tax amounted to £Bl2, the sum of £932 was paid as war tax on dividends, while probably another £IOO will be levied on the gate receipts under the amusement tax.
